Choosing to climb Africa’s highest peak is an easy decision—but choosing how to get to the top is the real challenge. With seven official paths to Uhuru Peak, every climber asks the same question: “Which is the best Kilimanjaro route for me?”

At Simba Africa Safaris, we’ve guided hundreds of climbers to the summit. We know that the “best” route isn’t just about the shortest path; it’s about scenery, wildlife, and most importantly, your acclimatisation success rate.

1. The Lemosho Route: The “Scenery King” (Our Top Recommendation)

If you want the most beautiful and complete Kilimanjaro experience, Lemosho is the best Kilimanjaro route for you.

  • Success Rate: ~90% (on the 8-day itinerary).
  • Why we love it: It starts in the remote west, offering a high chance of spotting the animals found in Kilimanjaro (like the Colobus monkey) before merging with the main trail. It is longer, which gives your body the perfect amount of time to adjust to the altitude.
  • Best for: Photographers and those who want a quieter, premium experience.

2. The Machame Route: The “Whiskey” Route

Machame is the most popular choice on the mountain. It is famous for its “climb high, sleep low” profile, which is great for your red blood cells

  • Success Rate: ~85%.
  • Why we love it: It’s adventurous and includes the thrilling scramble up the Barranco Wall.
  • Best for: Social hikers and fit adventurers who don’t mind a busier trail.

3. The Marangu Route: The “Coca-Cola” Route

This is the oldest route and the only one that offers sleeping huts instead of tents.

  • Success Rate: ~50% (on the 5-day) to 80% (on the 6-day).
  • Why we love it: It’s the most comfortable choice if you aren’t a fan of camping. However, because the ascent is very quick, we only recommend the 6-day version to ensure you reach the top safely.
  • Best for: Budget-conscious travelers and those who prefer a bed over a sleeping bag.

4. The Northern Circuit: The “Grand Tour”

This is the newest and longest route on the mountain. It nearly circles the entire summit.

  • Success Rate: 95%+ (The highest on the mountain).
  • Why we love it: It is the quietest route. You get 360-degree views of the mountain and almost complete solitude.
  • Best for: Trekkers with extra time who want the highest possible guarantee of reaching the summit.

Which Route Should You Choose?

  • For Wildlife: Choose Lemosho or Rongai.
  • For Success: Choose the Northern Circuit or 8-Day Lemosho.
  • For Comfort: Choose Marangu.
